Wednesday 31st May - Erstfeld, Switerland to Atzenbach, Germany (180 km)

Got up to heavy rain. We had a reasonable breakfast and Daz rang his recovery to see what they would do about the bike, but they weren’t open for another hour so Daz decided to set off and see how it went.

We were soon on the motorway and making very good progress. Because of the weather, the visibility was poor - which was a real shame because I know the scenery would have been spectacular, especially by the lake we rode around. The only memorable thing about this part of the journey was as we approached Basel the motorway split with little warning and on a bend. Just before the split there were four lanes, then the inside two went one way and the outside two went another. Me and Daz were both about to move from lanes 3 to 2 as we rounded the corner and saw the barrier separating the split. It gave us a bit of a fright, but luckily we all got round.

Then just after we had left Switzerland and got into Germany the police had blocked the motorway and were forcing the traffic onto other roads. We did a quick check of the map and found a road that continued north through the Black Forrest.

The weather had been getting steadily better the further north we went, and by the time we left the motorway it was sunny. The road we'd chosen was quite nice, Daz's bike was running fine, things seemed to be on the up. Then Nig's visor popped off completely and went flying down the road.

We pulled into the next town, trying to find a replacement helmet for Nig, we'd given up on trying to find somebody with bits to mend his. Unfortunately, despite some car dealers in most of the towns selling bikes and/or scooters, none of them stocked any bike gear.

At this point I decided as it was sunny and we were in a nice area, we should try and find a campsite and set up camp, dry off our gear and chill out for the rest of the day. We found a campsite in a place called Atzenbach run by an old couple who didn't speak English at all but were very friendly and tried to be helpful.

We then tried to find somewhere to buy some food and beer. This turned out to be somewhat tricky. I guest people who live in this area don't eat out much! We eventually found a mini super market two towns further on, bough everything needed for windy stew and some beer and then returned to the campsite and relaxed for the rest of the night. The weather was dry but it was bloody cold!
