Friday 2nd June

Got up to glorious sunshine and decided to walk into Mainz and have a day off the bikes.

It was a long walk, but a nice day so that was OK. We got a couple of pizzas at Pizza Hut and then went into this really old church in the centre of Mainz.

The church was weird. Some of the sculptures and statues were down-right gruesome; angles stabbing folk in the throat while standing on them, flying skeletons, impaling, dismembered bodies – you name it, it was there. It was actually very interesting and we spent a fair bit of time in there!

On the way back to the site we passed a boat which turned out to be a bar. As it would have been rude to just walk past we popped on for a swift one. This turned into four or five – but it was a nice day and we were on holiday!

When we got back to the campsite there was a huge tent next to ours with three Swiss bikes and a car parked outside. One of these bikes was a triumph so we went to have a look. As we were looking, one of the Swiss blokes came over, got on his bike, rode it to the other side of his tent, put a cover over it and went back into his tent. Never said a word or even looked at us. What was all that about? Ignorant git!

As we were stood there stunned at what had happened - the bloke who had given us the bottle of Champaign on the way down wondered over. He lived locally and had just popped in to check on his caravan or something on his XJR. He invited us over for a beer and to look at his bike - which was lovely.

We had another nice meal at the local restaurant. As we were eating we saw Mr XJR do a burn-out as he left - which I'm convinced he did for our benefit - what a good lad! Then when we returned to the tents we found he'd left us another bottle of Champaign!

We chilled out for the rest of the night with a couple of beers.
