Day 5 - Tuesday 5th June

The nice folk in the B & B let us have a late breakfast so we both had a bit of a lay-in. We got up and had breakfast at 10am and set off at around 10:45. It was a damp start and the weather got steadily worse as we approached Edinburgh. Luckily as we left Edinburgh it cleared up and by the time we were in the borders it was bright sunshine.

We had a very pleasant ride through the borders only spoilt by some idiot in a Ford Mondeo trying to run me off the road - but he got his competence a little later thanks to a speed camera (never thought I'd be thanking a speed camera for anything!).

Over the England border we stopped at the same pub we stopped at on the way up north of Newcastle for a cuppa and to fill the bikes.

Then we joined the A1. I think the accumulation of all the miles we'd ridden in the last 5 days and carrying the luggage on our backs caught up with us on the A1. It was a very tedious, and physically painful journey back and seemed to go on forever. I thought it would get better once we left the A1 at Ripon, but it didn't really - we both just wanted to get off the bikes at that point.

After a 6 hour ride we eventually got home. We were both very pleased. Nig washed his nice new bike - something he'd been wanting to do every day of the trip!

In total I did 1021 mile and Nig did 1181 (80 more each way from Scunthorpe). It was a very enjoyable trip and I can't wait to go back.
